Located in Belgaum district of Karnataka bordering the forests of Goa and Maharastra, one of Karnataka’s youngest, Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over the catchment area of Mahadayi River in Khanapur taluk. It shares boundary with Dandeli Anshi Tiger Reserve in Karnataka and Mahadeyi & Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary in Goa and forests of Tillari in Maharasthra. The total area of the sanctuary spreads over 190 sq Kms. This area is the place of origin and catchment basin for many important rivers like Mahadayi, Malaprabha, Pandri, Markandeya, Tillari, Bailnadi etc., apart from a number of streams. The area encompasses several Geomorphological lime stone formations with a number of caves, which support unique wild fauna and flora. One can be astonished with the amazing bio-diversity found in a such a small area.Karnataka ecotrails has a basecamp at Hemmadaga with a tented facility to start the Bhimgad landscape treks. It is 2o kms away from Khanapur.
